Automated Ovine Loin Cut
Melbourne Power has developed an automated cutting system for the ovine carcase loin cut that measures and locates the cut with precision and performs it automatically.
How it works
- Presentation. The carcase is presented in front of the saw on an overhead chain.
- Measurement. The system takes a calibrated measurement from the top of the chain down to the exact point where the cut needs to be made. The loin cut sits between the 4th and 5th rib.
- Locating the cut. This measurement is taken either using X-ray equipment, or by an operator pinpointing the position with a laser.
- Cutting. Once the position is set, the saw moves into place and makes the cut precisely at that point, between the two ribs.
Performance
The system is being developed to reach 12 cuts per minute, up from the 8 cuts per minute of comparable automated systems on the market today.
Results so far
Since installation, the system has been running every day and has reduced the amount of manual labour needed for this cut, delivering ongoing cost savings for the business.
